Over 280 Dead, Hundreds Injured in India Tripe Train Crash

Buzz Feedz: A tragic accident took place in the Indian city of Odisha, resulting in the country's deadliest rail accident in ten years. According to government officials, at least 288 people were killed and around 900 injured when two passenger trains collided.


Officials have expressed fear of further increase in casualties. Odisha Fire Department Director General Sidhanshu Sarangi said that 207 bodies have been recovered so far. Disturbing images from the scene show rescuers searching through the wreckage for survivors. In videos shared on social media, ambulances can be seen arriving and people being rescued from the overturned train carriages.


Eyewitnesses described a devastating scene, with blood, broken limbs and distraught people. In a show of solidarity, hundreds of youths lined up outside a government hospital in Odisha to donate blood.


According to Federal Minister for Railways Ashwini Vishnu, relief teams from Bhubaneswar have been deployed to West Bengal's Odisha and Kolkata. The National Disaster Response Force has sent three teams to the accident site and six more teams are being mobilized.


The collision took place around 7 pm local time when the Howrah Superfast Express, which was traveling from Bangalore to Howrah, derailed and collided with the Coromandel Express, which was traveling from Kolkata to Chennai.


Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that the first priority of the authorities is to shift the injured to hospitals. Relief operations are underway and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and assured that all possible assistance will be provided to the affected people.
